Screen Printing Process
THE PROCESS
Screen printing is the phenomenon of printing images onto garments. The heart of the process involves a fine mesh
screen that is tightly stretched onto a rigid frame. The mesh is masked off with a photosensitive emulsion creating a stencil the ink passes through.
Our "in-house" art department works with the client to create their perfect design. The artwork is color separated into individual transparency films that are placed on the prepared emulsion screen and exposed to a bright UV light. When the screen is washed out, you are left with a custom designed stencil.
Screens are fitted onto a manufacturing rotary press, sometimes refered to as a printing press wheel. Each color is aligned to the master design. The screens are filled with ink and the printing process begins; passing ink through each screen as the wheel is rotated to every ink station.
As the garments complete their printing sequence they are loaded onto a drying conveyor belt.
They pass through a heat-tunnel at 320 degrees Fahrenheit to "cure" the ink. Inks that are properly cured will remain on the garment indefinitely.
THE ARTWORK
Tite Tee's offers a large selection of stock artwork at no charge. However, if you prefer to provide your own artwork, the file must be in one of the acceptable graphic file formats. Artwork files that are not in an acceptable file format are subject to art time charges in order to prepare it for printing. Art time is charged in 1/2 hour increments at $45 an hour. Art time charges will be incurred if artwork needs to be touched up, reconstructed, custom created from scratch, color separated or manipulated in any way.
Our "in-house" art department works to ensure designs print as accurately as possible. Small color variances can be expected due to differences in garment colors, variances in ink opacities, and the overall blending of inks. Light color inks on dark shirts will require an under-base to be printed first as a primer. When an under-base is required, it is considered another color and requires another screen charge.
THE FINAL PRODUCT
All completed orders are inspected, counted, folded, and packaged at Quality Control according to the Customers Order Form. Tite Tee's prides itself on our impeccable quality control.
How Is Screen Printing Priced
Screen printing charges include art time fees (if required), set up charges, and the printing cost plus garment.
Set up and Number of Colors in a Design
Screen printing is charged by the number of colors in a design, not the size of the design. The greater the number of colors printed in a design the higher the printing cost and set up charge. Set up charges include transparancy films and screens. Each ink color in a design requires a seperate screen. Set up charge per screen is $24. For example, a design with 2 colors on the front and 1 color on the back has a $72 set up charge. Re-orders within one year are charged $15 per screen.
Type of Garment and Quality
The type of garment and quality of fabric can vary depending on the thickness and content of the fabric. The standard, unisex T-shirt comes in three grades: standard 5.4 oz 100% cotton, 5.6 oz cotton/polyester blend, and 6.1 oz premium 100% cotton.
The standard T-shirt is a 5.4 oz 100% cotton and tends to run smaller in size and pulls tight when exposed to heat such as hot water or dryer heat. The 5.6 oz 50/50 cotton/polyster blend is slightly sturdier in fabric weight, however, it also pulls tight when exposed to heat such as hot water or dryer heat. The 6.1 oz 100% cotton is our most popular shirt. The 6.1 oz 100% has a fuller cut with a generous fit. *It is our opinion that the 6.1 oz 100% has little noticeable shrinkage and will mantain its size after washing and drying.*
Ring-spun cotton is the highest quality jersey material available and costs more. These T-shirts range from the softest 4.3 oz 100% sheer cotton jersey, 4.8 oz 100% fine cotton jersey, to the 6.1 oz 100% cotton. Our most popular ring-spun T-shirts are manufactured by American Apparel. American Apparel also offers a 3% - 5% spandex/cotton for a more fitted T-shirt.
